Member Plus Newsletter, October 8th, 2023

Dear Clinic Members,

Happy October! We’re writing today with an update on vaccine availability.

FLU SHOT — We have seasonal influenza shots in stock. We do recommend a flu shot every fall for most patients. Please call to schedule a time to get yours if you would like.

COVID BOOSTER — It is looking like it may be some time before our clinic receives doses of the new Covid booster, since vaccine suppliers seem to be currently focusing on the large pharmacies, (e.g., CVS, Walgreens, Safeway). We do encourage all of our patients to get the new Covid booster however they can, although if you’ve had an actual Covid infection recently you should wait until three months after the infection to get your booster. It is fine to get your flu shot and your Covid booster at the same time at the pharmacy if that is most convenient for you.

RSV VACCINE – We continue to encourage eligible patients to get this vaccine. Unlike the flu shot and Covid booster, it is looking like the protection provided by the RSV booster lasts at least a couple of years. The cost of the booster is being covered under prescription drug plans, so please check in with your pharmacy about whether they have it available. At this point, we are not planning to have it in stock at the clinic.

We have continued to see many patients coming down with Covid over the last several weeks. It looks like there are also a couple of non-Covid viral infections circulating. Please consider wearing a mask in high-risk settings, and break out the hand sanitizer again if you’d put it away. If you do test positive for Covid, call to let us know and we can discuss whether a course of Paxlovid or Lagevrio would be warranted.

We will provide additional updates when we have new information to share in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here are five tips for a healthier autumn.

* October 10th is World Mental Health Day (idea: do a self-care inventory or     check in with a loved one about their mental health)

* Eat fresh, healthy, local food (idea: theBainbridge Farmers’ Market runs        through the end of November and you can order fromKitsap Fresh year- round)

* Stay active even as the daylight hours wane (idea: sign up for a fun run!)

* Get enough vitamin D (this article is a good resource)

* Get some outside time even when it’s not sunny (tip: you can reap physical and mental benefits from even a few minutes in your yard or a brief walk, although a true immersion in nature is a great idea! Washington State Parks offer free admission on October 10th, November 11, and November 25.)
